Upgrading Kadant Carmanah Design’s network to a unified Cisco Meraki full-stack solution was one of the most transformative infrastructure projects I’ve led. This wasn’t just a hardware refresh, it was a complete rethinking of how our network supported 300+ users across engineering, manufacturing, and administration.
I proposed a full Meraki deployment, wired LAN, wireless, firewalls, video surveillance, and cloud-based management chosen for its centralized control, scalability, and API extensibility. I began with a detailed audit including wireless heatmapping with Ekahau, port scanning, and topology mapping across all facilities. I also shadowed staff to pinpoint friction points, which directly influenced AP placement and PoE provisioning.
The migration followed a phased rollout:
All hardware was pre-staged and configured via the Meraki Dashboard, with port mapping, VLAN tagging, and global policies pushed prior to deployment. I performed the switchover over weekends and after-hours windows minimizing business disruption through planned, department-by-department cutovers.
I configured Layer 7 firewall rules, enabled IPS/anti-malware protection, and set QoS policies to prioritize VoIP and video traffic. Guest Wi-Fi was segmented and isolated with VLAN tagging and firewall rules. To support adoption, I ran hands-on training for our IT team and created user-facing guides for Wi-Fi onboarding and self-service troubleshooting.
